California — A fast-growing burger chain with hundreds of locations across the United States is preparing for its next phase of expansion, and California is expected to play a key role in those plans.
Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, known for its steakburgers, shoestring fries and frozen custard desserts, has announced an ambitious growth strategy for 2026 that includes expanding its presence in the Golden State.
Although the brand has built a strong following across much of the Midwest and South, it still has a relatively small footprint in California compared to many of the state’s homegrown fast-food giants.
Freddy’s Plans Major Expansion in 2026
Earlier this month, the company announced plans to open 60 new restaurants during 2026 as part of a broader multi-year development strategy.
According to Freddy’s, future growth will focus on several regions across the country, including the Northeast, Rust Belt, Midwest, Pacific Northwest, Northern California and Florida.
The announcement signals the company’s continued push to introduce the brand to new markets while strengthening its presence in existing ones.
However, officials have not yet revealed which California cities will receive the new restaurants.
California Currently Has Just Seven Freddy’s Locations
Despite operating more than 580 restaurants nationwide, Freddy’s currently has only seven California locations.
Those restaurants are located in:
- Bakersfield
- Barstow
- Fontana
- Glendora
- Norco
- San Marcos
- Victorville
The limited number of locations has made the chain less familiar to many California residents compared to larger competitors like In-N-Out Burger, McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill.
With California remaining one of the nation’s largest restaurant markets, industry analysts see the state as a significant opportunity for future growth.
Brand Continues Looking for New Franchise Partners
To support its expansion, Freddy’s is actively seeking franchisees interested in opening new restaurants.
According to the company, the initial investment to open a Freddy’s franchise ranges from approximately $855,000 to $1.6 million, depending on factors such as restaurant size and location.
Chief Development Officer Andrew Thengvall said the company remains focused on helping franchise owners succeed as the brand continues expanding.

“A strong franchise system is built on operators who see long-term opportunity within the brand,” said Andrew Thengvall. “As Freddy’s continues to grow, we remain focused on supporting our franchisees through new restaurant prototypes, greater real estate flexibility and development strategies that help position the brand for sustainable growth.”
From Kansas Favorite to National Burger Chain
Freddy’s was founded in Wichita, Kansas, in 2002 by brothers Bill and Randy Simon.
The restaurant was named after their father, Freddy Simon, a World War II veteran whose legacy inspired the chain’s nostalgic 1940s- and 1950s-themed dining experience.
Today, Freddy’s menu features steakburgers, hot dogs, shoestring fries and freshly churned frozen custard, helping the brand steadily expand across the country.
While Californians will have to wait a little longer to learn exactly where the next restaurants will open, the company’s latest announcement suggests that more Freddy’s locations could soon become part of the state’s already competitive fast-food landscape.
