Los Angeles, California — A young mother was fatally struck by a stray bullet while sleeping beside her 1-year-old daughter inside her South Los Angeles home, leaving her family mourning a devastating loss and searching for answers after the overnight shooting.
Authorities identified the victim as 20-year-old Maria Barrios Ventura, who was inside her residence in the 400 block of West 103rd Street in the Vermont Vista neighborhood when gunfire erupted at around 3:35 a.m. on July 19.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Ventura died after a bullet pierced the bedroom where she was sleeping with her boyfriend and their young child.
Boyfriend Describes the Terrifying Moments
Ventura’s boyfriend, Omar Misael, said the family was asleep when the shooting suddenly shattered the quiet morning.
According to him, a stray bullet traveled through the bedroom window and struck Ventura, while several additional rounds hit areas around the home.
“A stray bulled passed through here and struck my partner, and another seven shots were fired and hit around here. She died about 10 minutes later,” he told NBC Los Angeles.
Another nearby resident, Jose Chavez, also told NBC Los Angeles that his vehicle was struck during the gunfire, highlighting how multiple shots were fired through the neighborhood.
Paramedics Tried to Save the Young Mother
When officers with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrived at the scene, they found Ventura suffering from a gunshot wound.
According to local reports, investigators said she had been struck in the head.
Emergency crews immediately began lifesaving efforts, but despite those attempts, Ventura was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect, and the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
Family Faces Heartbreaking Loss
Ventura’s death has left loved ones devastated, especially as they now care for her 1-year-old daughter.
In a GoFundMe campaign, family members described the tragedy as sudden and overwhelming.
“This sudden and heartbreaking event has left her family devastated and struggling to cope with the loss. She was a loving mother, and her absence is felt deeply by everyone who knew her,” a family member wrote.
The fundraiser was organized by Ventura’s aunt, Liliana Lopez, to help cover funeral expenses, transport Ventura’s body back to Guatemala, and provide financial support for the little girl she leaves behind.
Fundraiser Aims to Support Her Daughter’s Future
According to Lopez, most of Ventura’s relatives live in Guatemala, leaving the family with limited support in Los Angeles during this difficult time.
The fundraiser has set a goal of $13,000 to help cover immediate expenses and provide stability for the child.
“We currently don’t have anything for her daughter, and any contribution– no matter how small– would mean the world to us,” Lopez wrote. “Your support will help ensure that her daughter received the care and stability she needs.”
As detectives continue investigating what led to the deadly gunfire, Ventura’s loved ones are left grieving the loss of a young mother whose life was cut short while she slept beside the child she was raising.
