Gulf Coast, United States — Residents from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana and Texas are being urged to closely monitor the latest forecasts as Tropical Depression Two is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha on Monday, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall, flooding, coastal impacts and dangerous beach conditions throughout the week.
The National Hurricane Center issued its first advisory for the system late Sunday morning after it formed south of Panama City, Florida. Once sustained winds reach 40 mph, the system will officially become Tropical Storm Bertha, the second named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
While forecasters have a general idea of where the storm could head, they stress that its future path remains uncertain.
Storm Expected to Drift Toward Louisiana and Texas
According to the latest forecast, the tropical system is expected to move very little through Monday before beginning a west to west-northwest track on Tuesday.
Current projections suggest Bertha could approach the Louisiana coastline sometime Wednesday into Thursday, with the possibility of moving toward Texas later in the week.
However, meteorologists caution that forecast tracks can change significantly during the early stages of tropical development, meaning residents across the northern Gulf Coast should continue monitoring updates over the coming days.
How Strong Could Bertha Become?
Forecasters say the storm’s ultimate strength will depend on several factors.
One challenge will be strong wind shear and dry air, both of which can weaken developing tropical systems. Despite those obstacles, the system is still expected to strengthen into a tropical storm.
If Bertha remains over the warm Gulf waters, where sea surface temperatures are in the mid-to-upper 80s, it could continue gaining strength before making landfall.
However, if the center of the storm moves inland sooner, it would likely weaken as it loses access to its primary energy source over the Gulf.
Because of these uncertainties, officials recommend that residents review their hurricane preparedness plans now rather than waiting until watches or warnings are issued.
Heavy Rain Could Trigger Flash Flooding
The greatest widespread impact may come from prolonged heavy rainfall.
Forecasters say communities from the Florida Panhandle westward through Louisiana and into Texas could experience periods of soaking rain throughout the week.
Some locations may receive as much as 8 inches of rainfall, increasing the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, urban neighborhoods and locations with poor drainage.
Exactly where the heaviest rain falls will depend on Bertha’s eventual track and speed.
Storm Surge, Rip Currents and Tornado Threat Also Possible
In addition to heavy rain, Bertha could produce coastal flooding and storm surge, especially during periods of high tide along portions of the northern Gulf Coast.
Beachgoers are also being warned about dangerous rip currents, which can become life-threatening even if skies appear calm.
Officials recommend avoiding Gulf Coast beaches while hazardous surf conditions persist.
Forecasters are also monitoring the possibility of isolated tropical tornadoes and waterspouts, which can develop quickly in the outer rainbands of tropical systems.
With hurricane season now becoming more active, emergency officials encourage residents from Florida to Texas to stay informed, prepare emergency supplies and monitor updates from local authorities and the National Hurricane Center as Bertha continues to develop.
