Harlingen, Texas — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says it carried out a record-setting immigration enforcement operation in South Texas, arresting 238 illegal immigrants in a single day during what officials described as the largest targeted enforcement action ever conducted by the agency’s Harlingen Field Office.
According to ICE, the operation took place in the Rio Grande Valley with assistance from law enforcement partners and resulted in the highest number of targeted arrests completed in a single day by Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) personnel based in Harlingen.
The agency said the operation was part of its ongoing efforts to identify and arrest individuals who are in the United States illegally and who have criminal histories or outstanding immigration violations.
ICE Calls Operation a Record for Harlingen Field Office
ICE officials described the enforcement action as a milestone for the Harlingen office, noting that the 238 arrests set a new single-day record for targeted immigration enforcement in the region.
In a statement announcing the results, Harlingen Field Office Director Juan Agudelo said the agency remains focused on immigration enforcement and public safety.
“The ICE mission continues to focus on enhancing public safety and restoring integrity to our nation’s immigration system,” ICE Harlingen Field Office Director Juan Agudelo said.
He added:
“We will stop at nothing to keep our American communities safe by removing one criminal illegal alien at a time.”
ICE did not immediately release a complete breakdown of all 238 individuals arrested but highlighted several cases involving people with prior criminal convictions.
Agency Highlights Arrests of Individuals With Criminal Histories
Among those identified by ICE was Manuel Morales-Geronimo, a Mexican national whom authorities described as an alleged Paisas gang member.
According to ICE, Morales-Geronimo has previous convictions that include assault causing bodily injury, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, driving while intoxicated, illegal entry into the United States, and three counts of illegal reentry.
Officials also announced the arrest of Jose Alfredo Castillo-Mendoza, another Mexican national.
ICE said Castillo-Mendoza had previously been convicted of attempted kidnapping, sexual battery, and illegal reentry into the United States.
The agency did not indicate whether either individual currently has legal representation or has responded to the allegations referenced in ICE’s announcement.
Enforcement Continues Amid Broader Immigration Debate
The operation comes as immigration enforcement remains a closely watched issue across the United States.
Recent enforcement actions have drawn increased public attention, including discussions surrounding immigration-related traffic stops and broader federal enforcement policies.
While ICE continues to emphasize arrests involving individuals with criminal records, immigration enforcement practices remain the subject of ongoing legal, political and public debate nationwide.
Officials have not announced whether additional enforcement operations are planned in the Rio Grande Valley in the coming days.
