Hardin County, Kentucky — A Kentucky man is facing a felony charge after authorities say they discovered his wife’s remains inside their home months after her death during a welfare check requested by a concerned individual.
According to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, John George Emrich, 59, was arrested on June 19 after deputies responded to a residence on Homestead Avenue in Hardin County to check on the welfare of those living there.
The case has raised questions after investigators said the woman had reportedly died months earlier, yet authorities were never contacted.
Welfare Check Led to Grim Discovery
Deputies arrived at the home and spoke with Emrich before entering the residence. Inside, officers discovered the remains of his wife.
According to an arrest citation, Emrich told deputies that his wife had died in February, meaning approximately four months had passed before law enforcement became aware of her death.
Authorities have not identified the woman publicly, and officials have not disclosed her cause of death. Police also have not revealed who requested the welfare check that ultimately led to the discovery.
Husband Arrested at the Scene
Following the discovery, deputies took Emrich into custody and transported him to the Hardin County Detention Center. He has been charged with abuse of a corpse, which is classified as a Class D felony under Kentucky law.
