Marathon, Florida — A Florida Keys woman is facing several criminal charges after authorities say she threatened Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies with a knife while responding to a disturbance involving another individual.
The incident unfolded Monday afternoon in Marathon, where deputies were called to investigate reports of a woman allegedly harassing a man while armed with a knife.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the area of U.S. 1 and Sombrero Beach Road at approximately 4:28 p.m. after receiving emergency calls about the situation.
Deputies Responded to Reports of Armed Disturbance
Investigators said deputies arrived at the scene after receiving information that a woman was confronting and harassing a man while carrying a knife.
When officers approached the suspect, authorities say the situation quickly escalated.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Jennifer Lynn Secrest, 35, allegedly pulled out the knife and began waving it while making threats toward the responding deputies.
The encounter prompted deputies to take immediate action to prevent the situation from becoming more dangerous.
Suspect Disarmed and Taken Into Custody
Authorities said deputies were eventually able to separate Secrest from the knife before placing her under arrest.
Officials have not released additional details about how the weapon was removed or whether less-lethal force was used during the arrest. Fortunately, no injuries were reported to deputies, the suspect, or any members of the public during the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office has also not disclosed what may have led to the initial confrontation involving the man before law enforcement arrived.
Woman Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
Following the incident, Secrest was booked on several criminal charges.
According to authorities, she faces:
- Two felony counts of aggravated assault with a weapon
- One felony count of resisting arrest
- Three misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest
- One misdemeanor charge of disorderly intoxication
Officials have not released additional information regarding her first court appearance or whether she has obtained legal representation.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
While no one was physically injured, investigators say the quick response by deputies helped safely resolve a potentially dangerous situation involving a weapon in a public area.
