Marion County, Florida — What began as a family fishing vacation ended in a life-changing tragedy after an 11-year-old Pennsylvania boy lost his hand in a terrifying alligator attack while visiting a popular Florida fishing camp.
The child, identified as Brodie Terry, was seriously injured on June 27 at Nelson’s Fish Camp in Marion County while spending time outdoors with his family.
According to relatives, the frightening incident unfolded just as Brodie was preparing to release a fish back into the water.
Alligator Grabbed the Boy’s Hand Without Warning
Family members said an 8-foot, 7-inch alligator suddenly lunged and clamped its jaws onto Brodie’s hand, triggering a desperate rescue attempt.
Brodie’s father immediately jumped into the water in an effort to save his son.
According to family member Andrew Raines, he fought to pry open the alligator’s jaws before the animal carried out one of its most dangerous survival behaviors.
“Brodie’s father jumped into the water on top of it and tried to pry his mouth open,” relative Andrew Raines said.
Moments later, the alligator performed what wildlife experts call a death roll—a powerful spinning motion used by alligators to overpower prey.
“The gator rolled, and that’s what ultimately severed Brodie’s hand.”
The maneuver is commonly used by alligators to tear apart prey or drag it underwater.
Doctors Tried to Save the Boy’s Hand
Emergency responders rushed Brodie to the hospital, where doctors made every effort to save his injured hand.Despite those efforts, medical teams were ultimately forced to amputate it because of the severity of the injuries.
After several days of treatment, Brodie was released from the hospital on Friday and has now returned to Pennsylvania, where he is continuing his recovery with his family.
Florida wildlife officials later located and euthanized the alligator involved in the attack.
Family Focused on Helping Brodie Move Forward
Brodie’s relatives say the accident has dramatically changed the young boy’s life.
In a statement, the family described the emotional and financial challenges they now face while supporting his recovery and rehabilitation.
“This tragic accident has not only changed Brodie’s life but has also placed a tremendous burden on his family as they navigate the aftermath.”
The family also spoke about Brodie’s love for sports and the obstacles he now faces.
“Brodie’s passion for fishing, baseball and football have always brought him joy, and now he faces the challenge of adapting to his new circumstances while holding onto the things he loves.”
Florida Continues to Record Rare but Serious Alligator Attacks
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida is home to an estimated 1.3 million alligators.
Since 1948, the state has documented more than 450 alligator attacks, although just over 30 have been fatal, making deadly encounters relatively uncommon despite the large alligator population.
The day after Brodie’s attack, another tragic incident occurred in Florida when a woman died after being attacked by an alligator while in shallow water at the Econlockhatchee River in Little Big Econ State Forest.
While serious alligator attacks remain rare, wildlife officials continue to remind residents and visitors to remain alert around lakes, rivers and other freshwater areas where alligators may be present.
