Key Largo, Florida — A Fourth of July getaway in the Florida Keys took a dramatic turn after a couple was arrested for allegedly leaving their two young children alone in a hotel room while they spent time drinking at the resort pool, according to authorities.
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon at the Reefhouse Resort & Marina in Key Largo, where hotel employees contacted law enforcement after discovering two unattended children inside a guest room.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, both parents now face child neglect charges following the investigation.
Hotel Staff Responded After Hearing a Baby Crying
Deputies said they were called to the resort at approximately 1:45 p.m. after hotel employees entered a room because they heard an unattended baby crying.
Inside, staff found two young children alone in nursery beds and cribs with no adults present.
Authorities did not disclose the children’s exact ages, describing them only as “young.” Concerned for their safety, hotel employees immediately contacted the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Parents Allegedly Found Drinking at Resort Pool
According to investigators, resort staff eventually located the children’s parents, Brian Nicholas Cannella, 43, and Allison Sirica Cannella, 40, at the hotel’s swimming pool.
Deputies said the couple was drinking alcoholic beverages when they were found.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage, interviewed witnesses and gathered additional evidence before determining that the children had allegedly been left alone for between 40 minutes and one hour.
Authorities said the timeline was established through surveillance video, witness statements and other investigative methods.
Children Safely Placed With Family Friend
Although the children were not reported to have suffered any physical injuries, deputies noted they appeared distressed after being left alone in the room.
The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified following the incident.
After responding to the resort, child welfare officials arranged for the children to be placed in the care of a family friend while the investigation continued.
Officials have not released additional details about the children’s condition or whether any further child welfare proceedings are expected.
Couple Faces Child Neglect Charges
Following the investigation, both Brian Nicholas Cannella and Allison Sirica Cannella were arrested and charged with child neglect, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The couple was transported to the Monroe County Jail, where they later posted bond and were released.
Authorities have not announced a date for their next court appearance, and additional court documents detailing the allegations were not immediately available.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not released further information regarding the circumstances that allegedly led to the children being left unattended.
The case serves as another reminder from authorities that young children should never be left alone, even for a short period, as emergencies can develop quickly and place them at serious risk.
