Chicago, Illinois — Federal authorities have announced the results of a large-scale law enforcement operation that led to 305 arrests and the safe recovery of 24 missing children across the Chicago area, describing the effort as one of the region’s most significant recent crackdowns on violent crime and criminal networks.
The operation, known as Operation New Dawn, brought together 11 federal agencies over a 60-day period to target suspects linked to violent offenses, drug trafficking, gun crimes, child exploitation and other serious criminal activity.
According to the FBI, the operation began in earnest on May 1 and focused on disrupting criminal organizations while locating children who had been reported missing or kidnapped.
FBI Highlights Results of Multi-Agency Operation
FBI Director Kash Patel described the initiative as a coordinated effort involving multiple federal agencies working toward a common goal.
“Operation New Dawn represents a massive, whole-of-government approach under President Trump’s leadership to cracking down on violent crimes and crimes against children in great American cities,” Patel said.
He added that the operation resulted in 305 arrests, the recovery of 24 children, and criminal charges involving robbery, kidnapping, drug trafficking, child exploitation and other offenses.
Patel also said the operation sends a strong message that federal law enforcement agencies intend to continue pursuing violent criminal networks through future initiatives, including Summer Heat 2.0.
Agencies Worked Together Under One Mission
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, participating agencies included the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), along with several other federal partners.
Officials described the effort as a “badgeless” operation, emphasizing that agencies worked together under the banner of the United States rather than operating independently.
U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros praised the collaboration and said rapid coordination is essential in addressing violent crime.
“It is my view that to combat violence, federal law enforcement must move at the speed of violence,” Boutros said.
He added that the success of Operation New Dawn demonstrated what could be achieved when agencies combine intelligence, personnel and investigative resources.
Violent Crime, Drug Trafficking and Gang Activity Targeted
Authorities said those arrested included suspects connected to drug trafficking, gun trafficking, gun offenses, robbery, kidnapping and immigration violations.
Among the individuals highlighted by officials was Felipe Dejesus Gomez Ramirez, whom Homeland Security Investigations identified as a convicted murderer and an illegal immigrant.
Federal authorities also announced the arrests of David Collins and Tyrone Thomas, who investigators say are members of Chicago’s Traveling Vice Lords gang. Both men have been federally charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl.
Officials said the operation also resulted in significant drug seizures, reinforcing what they described as the close connection between violent crime and illegal drug trafficking.
Hundreds of Federal Charges Filed
The operation has already produced 179 federal defendants charged across 140 newly filed criminal cases, according to officials.
Perhaps one of the most significant outcomes was the safe recovery of 24 children, many of whom had previously been reported missing or kidnapped.
Federal officials said the operation reflects an ongoing strategy to combine intelligence, investigative resources and coordinated enforcement efforts to reduce violent crime while protecting vulnerable children and communities throughout the Chicago area.
