Stillwater, Minnesota — A Memorial Day barbecue turned into a frightening medical emergency for a Minnesota teenager after a tiny metal grill brush bristle hidden inside a hamburger reportedly punctured his intestine, forcing surgeons to remove part of his bowel.
The incident has prompted renewed warnings about the potential dangers of wire grill brushes, especially as families continue gathering for summer cookouts.
Hidden Grill Bristle Led to Medical Emergency
According to Noah Walden, the accident happened during a Memorial Day barbecue when he unknowingly swallowed a loose metal bristle that had likely detached from a grill-cleaning brush.
Noah said he ate two hamburgers that day and believes one contained the tiny piece of wire.
“I had two burgers, and my guess is one of them had the grill bristle in it, and I swallowed it,” Walden said.
At first, he had no idea anything was wrong. However, about a week later, he began experiencing severe abdominal pain that quickly became unbearable.
Pain Became Too Severe to Ignore
As Noah’s condition worsened, he realized something was seriously wrong. He recalled reaching a point where the pain became so intense that he could no longer get comfortable.
“I got up and couldn’t lay back down,” he said.
Recognizing the seriousness of his symptoms, Noah told his parents he wanted to go to the emergency room.
“It was just so much pain.”
Doctors soon discovered the tiny metal bristle had punctured his intestine, creating a dangerous internal injury that required immediate surgery.
Surgeons Removed Part of His Bowel
According to Noah’s mother, Amie Walden, surgeons were forced to remove a portion of his bowel because of the damage caused by the sharp metal wire.
Doctors also performed surgery through a six-inch abdominal incision to repair the injury. The frightening ordeal has left the family urging others to reconsider using traditional wire grill brushes.
“Get rid of your metal grill bristle brushes,” Amie Walden said.
Noah also offered simple advice to anyone enjoying summer cookouts.
“Do a lot of chewing when you’re grilling, especially if you have a wire grill brush.”
Millions of Grill Brushes Recalled
The family’s warning comes as concerns continue growing over injuries linked to wire grill brushes.

Earlier this year, more than 13 million metal grill brushes were recalled, including 10.2 million recalled specifically because of ingestion hazards after reports that loose metal bristles had become embedded in food and were accidentally swallowed.
Health experts warn that swallowed grill brush bristles can cause serious injuries, including punctures to the mouth, throat, stomach, or intestines, sometimes requiring emergency surgery.
Manufacturer Says Recall Was Precautionary
Nexgrill, one of the manufacturers involved in the large recall, previously said only a limited number of injuries had been reported.
In a statement issued during the recall, the company said it voluntarily removed the products from the market out of caution and in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Consumer safety experts recommend carefully inspecting grill grates before cooking, wiping the surface after cleaning, and considering alternative cleaning tools such as nylon brushes, grill stones, or scraper-style cleaning devices designed to reduce the risk of loose metal bristles.
As Noah continues recovering from his surgery, his family hopes sharing his experience will encourage others to take extra precautions before their next backyard barbecue.
