Bethel, Ohio — A police chief in Ohio is facing dozens of felony charges after a grand jury indictment accused him of sexually abusing a student during his time as a teacher and youth instructor more than a decade ago.
According to prosecutors, Bethel Police Chief Chad Essert was indicted on 70 criminal counts, including allegations of sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The charges stem from alleged incidents that investigators say occurred between 2005 and 2010.
The indictment marks a significant development in a case that has drawn attention across southwest Ohio due to Essert’s role in law enforcement.
Grand Jury Returns 70-Count Indictment
The Clermont County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced that Essert was indicted on 56 counts of sexual battery and 14 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor following grand jury proceedings.
Prosecutors allege the offenses occurred while Essert served as both a school teacher and an instructor with the Young Marines program.
Authorities said the alleged victim was one of Essert’s students and that the alleged incidents took place in both Clermont County and neighboring Hamilton County.
At this stage, prosecutors have not publicly released additional details regarding the specific allegations outlined in the indictment.
Authorities Praise Victim for Coming Forward
Law enforcement officials emphasized the difficulty victims often face when reporting allegations involving individuals in positions of authority.
Clermont County Sheriff Christopher Stratton commended the individual who came forward and highlighted the importance of accountability.
“It takes tremendous courage for a victim to come forward, especially when the accused wears a badge and holds a position of authority,” Stratton said.
“Today’s indictment demonstrates that no one is above the law. Every victim deserves to be heard, and every allegation will be thoroughly investigated and pursued in accordance with the law.”
Officials stressed that the criminal case will proceed through the judicial system and that the charges remain allegations unless proven in court.
Investigation Separate From Earlier Inquiry
The indictment follows a separate investigation that had already placed Essert on administrative leave earlier this year.
According to local reports, authorities had been reviewing allegations of misconduct involving Essert while he was serving as police chief.
However, investigators reportedly found no criminal conduct connected to those specific allegations.
Following the recent indictment, officials clarified that the newly filed charges are unrelated to the earlier investigation and involve entirely separate allegations dating back years before Essert became police chief.
Authorities said the current criminal case is based on alleged conduct that occurred while Essert was working as an educator and youth instructor.
Arrested in Florida and Returned to Ohio
Following the indictment, Essert was arrested in Pinellas County, Florida, before being extradited back to Ohio.
Court records have not yet indicated whether he has entered a plea in response to the charges. As the legal proceedings continue, local officials are also taking administrative steps regarding his position with the village.
Village Leaders Move Toward Removal
Bethel Mayor Jay Dee Noble II said he intends to begin the process of removing Essert from his role as police chief.
According to local reports, village leaders have been dealing with the fallout from the allegations and their impact on municipal employees and residents.
“This has been a very difficult time for our village,” Noble said.

“It has caused a great deal of distress for our village employees, especially the other members of our police department.”
The case is expected to move through Ohio’s court system in the coming months as prosecutors and defense attorneys prepare for future proceedings.
If convicted, Essert could face significant penalties given the number and severity of the charges outlined in the indictment.
