Canoga Park, California — A Southern California family is mourning the loss of their beloved dog after a Los Angeles police officer fatally shot the animal while responding to what was initially reported as a welfare check.

Raymon Alvarez, who lives nearby, told local media that he heard loud screaming while leaving for a walk. When he returned, he heard sounds that he later realized were gunshots.

The dog owner’s son also spoke publicly following the incident, saying his mother had simply been cheering during the game and insisting that Jameson, while energetic, was not an aggressive animal.
