Canoga Park, California — A Southern California family is mourning the loss of their beloved dog after a Los Angeles police officer fatally shot the animal while responding to what was initially reported as a welfare check.
The incident unfolded Saturday evening at a condominium complex in Canoga Park and has sparked emotional reactions from residents and animal lovers after witnesses claimed the family was simply celebrating a basketball victory when police arrived.
The dog, a 2-year-old mixed breed named Jameson, died at the scene.
Welfare Check Leads to Tragic Outcome
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a condominium building on Jordan Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. after a neighbor reported hearing a woman screaming inside the residence.
Police said officers arrived to conduct a welfare check and encountered the family dog during their response.
Authorities stated that the dog rushed toward officers, leading one officer to discharge a firearm. Jameson, described as a golden retriever, Saint Bernard, and poodle mix, was killed during the encounter.
The shooting occurred within moments of officers arriving at the scene, leaving family members shocked and devastated.
Family Says They Were Celebrating Knicks Victory
Relatives and witnesses disputed the circumstances that prompted the welfare check, saying the screams heard by neighbors were actually expressions of excitement during a basketball celebration.
According to family members, they had been watching the New York Knicks and celebrating the team’s championship victory when neighbors apparently interpreted the loud cheering as signs of distress.
A photograph taken before the incident reportedly showed Jameson wearing a New York Knicks shirt while spending time with the family.
Cellphone footage recorded after the shooting captured emotional reactions from those inside the building.
“Oh my god! Oh my God,” a woman cried. “I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe this is happening.”
Moments later, the woman explained what had been happening before officers arrived.
“We were just so happy,” she said. “We were just so happy. We were just celebrating the Knicks. We were f***ing celebrating the Knicks.”
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Residents in the neighborhood said they initially had no idea what was unfolding.
Raymon Alvarez, who lives nearby, told local media that he heard loud screaming while leaving for a walk. When he returned, he heard sounds that he later realized were gunshots.
“I didn’t think they were gunshots at first because this area is not really known for any sort of gun violence,” Alvarez said.
The dog owner’s son also spoke publicly following the incident, saying his mother had simply been cheering during the game and insisting that Jameson, while energetic, was not an aggressive animal.
The tragedy has generated sympathy throughout the community, particularly among neighbors who knew the dog.
Neighbor Expresses Regret Over Outcome
The individual who called 911 reportedly expressed remorse after learning what happened.
According to reports, the neighbor said they contacted authorities because they genuinely believed someone inside the residence might be in danger.
While maintaining that the call was made out of concern, the neighbor reportedly felt guilty about how events ultimately unfolded.

LAPD Reviewing Incident
The Los Angeles Police Department has launched a review of the shooting and is examining the circumstances surrounding the officer’s actions.
Meanwhile, family members and supporters have created a memorial for Jameson in the hallway where the incident occurred.
Flowers, photographs, and messages have been left in remembrance of the dog, who relatives described as a cherished member of the family.
As the review continues, many questions remain about how the encounter escalated and whether different actions could have prevented the tragic outcome.
