Highlands County, Florida — A tragic boating accident in Central Florida has left two people dead and another missing after an airboat carrying seven passengers overturned while traveling toward the Kissimmee River.
Emergency crews responded to the incident Monday after receiving reports of a capsized vessel in the Istokpoga Canal, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
Authorities said the accident unfolded as the group was making its way through the canal system, turning what should have been a routine trip into a major search and rescue operation.
Airboat Began Taking on Water Before Capsizing
According to investigators, seven individuals were aboard the airboat when it approached the Kissimmee River from the Istokpoga Canal.
Officials said the vessel entered a deeper section of water and began taking on water unexpectedly. As conditions worsened, the airboat eventually overturned, throwing all seven passengers into the water.
The sudden emergency triggered an immediate response from local and state agencies as crews raced to locate everyone who had been onboard.
