Atlantic City, New Jersey — A 3-year-old boy who suffered serious injuries after being struck in an alleged hit-and-run near his home has finally returned to his family, walking, talking and playing again after weeks of hospitalization and rehabilitation.
For his father, Frank Lawrence, seeing his son back on his feet is a moment he once feared might never come.
Isaiah Lawrence Returns Home After Weeks of Recovery
More than a month after the crash, Isaiah was finally able to return home on Friday.
The little boy, who suffered significant injuries to his skull and spinal cord, spent weeks receiving medical care before undergoing rehabilitation.
His father remembered seeing Isaiah immediately following the crash and fearing the worst.
Lawrence said he repeatedly prayed for his son to survive, unsure whether the toddler would ever recover enough to walk and speak again.
Isaiah was sedated for approximately six or seven days, according to his father, making an already terrifying situation even more difficult for the family.
But the 3-year-old gradually began fighting his way back. When asked about his return, Isaiah simply said, “I came home.”
Family Calls Recovery a Miracle
For Lawrence, his son’s recovery represents something far bigger than a medical milestone. He credited his faith for helping him get through the darkest moments.
“God has been with me. The miracle maker because he got this little guy here,” Lawrence said.
Neighbors have also watched Isaiah’s recovery unfold. Neighbor Tonya Tolliver said she saw the boy’s condition following the crash and has been amazed by how far he has come.
She described Isaiah as incredibly strong, especially considering the severity of the injuries he suffered.
Suspect Charged in Atlantic City Hit-and-Run
Police say the crash was not simply a tragic accident that ended with the driver leaving the scene. According to court documents, investigators used surveillance video to track down the vehicle believed to have been involved.
The vehicle was eventually located at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. A 67-year-old man from Long Island has been charged in connection with the hit-and-run.
The circumstances surrounding why the driver allegedly failed to remain at the scene remain a major source of anger for Isaiah’s family and neighbors.
Tolliver questioned why anyone would leave after striking a young child. She asked what could have been important enough at the casino for the driver not to stop for a 3-year-old boy.
The criminal case remains pending.
Family Was Already Coping With Another Tragedy
The crash came during an especially painful period for the Lawrence family. Just two months before Isaiah was struck, Lawrence’s longtime partner and the mother of their six children suddenly died.
That loss left the family grieving before Isaiah’s injuries added another devastating crisis.
Friends, neighbors and members of the community have since rallied around the family through online fundraisers and other forms of support.
Their assistance has helped the Lawrences navigate an extraordinarily difficult period.
Isaiah Takes Another Step Forward
This weekend brought another emotional milestone when Lawrence took Isaiah to church for the first time since the crash. For his father, simply being able to sit in church with his son represented a moment he had once feared would never happen.
He said he was grateful to be there and able to give thanks while asking for the strength needed for the road ahead.
Isaiah still faces numerous doctor’s appointments and continued recovery, meaning his journey is far from finished. But his family says the toddler has already demonstrated remarkable resilience.
Like his favorite superhero, Spider-Man, Isaiah has shown that he’s ready to keep fighting.
