Pine Manor, Florida — A Florida father is facing a felony animal cruelty charge after authorities say he repeatedly harmed his teenage daughter’s kittens as a form of punishment, including allegations that two kittens were killed and another was seriously injured.
The disturbing allegations came to light after deputies responded to a Pine Manor home following a report that a man was allegedly attempting to harm a 2-month-old kitten named Luna.
Father Arrested After Deputies Respond to Home
According to Lee County Sheriff’s Office records, David Charette Jr., 48, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated animal cruelty involving excessive pain or death.
His bond was set at $100,000.
Deputies were initially called to the home after receiving a report involving a man allegedly attempting to drown and strike Luna.
When deputies arrived, they encountered a black kitten and removed the animal from the residence.
Body-camera footage released by authorities shows a deputy receiving the kitten while a man believed to be Charette attempted to explain that the animal was healthy.
The kitten was subsequently placed inside a carrier and taken away from the home.
Daughter Allegedly Described Pattern of Animal Abuse
During their investigation, deputies reportedly learned that the alleged incident involving Luna was not an isolated event.
According to the sheriff’s office, the teenager told investigators that her father would abuse or kill the family’s kittens when she got into trouble, allegedly using the animals as a form of punishment.
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno expressed outrage over the allegations.
The sheriff told local media that the claim that a parent would kill his daughter’s kittens because she had misbehaved was deeply disturbing.
A neighbor who spoke about the case also described the alleged abuse as “horrible” and “heartbreaking.”
Investigators Say Two Kittens Were Killed
Detectives allegedly discovered that two kittens had died during the previous year.
Authorities said both animals had reportedly been buried in the home’s backyard, although investigators recovered only one of the remains during a search.
The first alleged killing involved a 1-month-old kitten in June. Investigators said Charette allegedly smothered the kitten using a rag soaked in bleach.
In another incident, authorities said a 3-month-old kitten was allegedly killed after being burned with a blow dryer.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the animals’ deaths.
Third Kitten Luna Survives and Receives Treatment
The latest alleged incident involved Luna, the 2-month-old kitten whose condition prompted the initial call to deputies.
According to investigators, Charette’s daughter told authorities that Luna had allegedly been hit with a nail polish bottle and placed inside a clothes dryer before deputies arrived.
The kitten was removed from the home and transported to a local animal hospital.
Authorities said Luna received medical treatment and is recovering.
Her condition remains an important part of the investigation as authorities document the alleged injuries.
Sheriff Calls Allegations ‘Sickening’
The case has sparked strong reactions from local officials and neighbors, particularly because authorities allege the animals were harmed in front of the teenager.
One neighbor told local media that the alleged killings happened in front of the child, describing the situation as deeply upsetting.
The allegations also raise concerns about the teenager’s safety and the circumstances inside the home. Authorities have not publicly released additional details about whether the child has been placed elsewhere.
