Fresno, California — The disappearance of a California mother of seven took a horrifying turn when investigators searching her former boyfriend’s home discovered her body inside, days after relatives began desperately looking for her. Authorities say the suspect initially fled Fresno following the killing before eventually surrendering to police.
The victim, Tatiana McIntyre, 29, also used the name Alison Riley and had gone to the home of her former boyfriend, Jeffrey Vernon Michaels, to visit the two children they shared.
Mom Disappeared After Going to Visit Her Children
The search for McIntyre began after she failed to pick up one of her children from school on Aug. 4.
Her ex-husband was alerted when the child remained waiting and attempted to contact McIntyre, but family members said they could not reach her.
Concern quickly grew as relatives began trying to determine where she had gone.
According to her family, McIntyre’s cellphone last pinged at Michaels’ Fresno residence at approximately 1 p.m. The phone subsequently went dead, adding to fears that something had gone seriously wrong.
Family members also tracked the Zipcar rental McIntyre had been driving and eventually located it near an orchard around McKinley and Academy avenues.
The vehicle had reportedly been abandoned, with McIntyre’s personal belongings still inside.
Police later seized the rental car as evidence as investigators worked to retrace her final known movements.
Police Find Woman Dead Inside Ex-Boyfriend’s Home
Investigators eventually obtained a search warrant for Michaels’ residence near Grove and Phillip streets.
When detectives entered the home, they made the grim discovery that would transform the missing-person investigation into a homicide case.
Authorities said they found McIntyre dead inside the residence with several lacerations.
The discovery provided investigators with a critical location in the case as they began working to determine what happened to the 29-year-old mother and what led to her death.
Police have not publicly identified a motive.
Suspect Allegedly Fled Before Turning Himself In
Authorities identified Jeffrey Vernon Michaels as the suspect in McIntyre’s death.
According to police, Michaels initially fled Fresno after the killing, prompting investigators to search for him.
He later contacted authorities and turned himself in Thursday evening.
Michaels was subsequently booked into the Fresno County Jail on a murder charge and is being held with bail set at $1 million.
Police Chief Mindy Casto said investigators have not yet determined a motive for the alleged killing.
The case remains under investigation as detectives continue examining evidence and McIntyre’s final movements.
Family Raises Concerns About Alleged History of Abuse
McIntyre’s family has also raised concerns about Michaels’ alleged history with the victim.
Her mother claimed that Michaels had previously abused McIntyre, alleging that he once choked her and prevented her from leaving a residence.
Other relatives reportedly said Michaels had a history of domestic violence.
Those allegations have not been established as facts in the current criminal case, and authorities have not announced whether previous incidents will form part of the prosecution.
