Milwaukee, Wisconsin — A Wisconsin family is mourning the loss of Walter “Wally” Williams, a 64-year-old cancer survivor and father of three, who was fatally struck while riding his bicycle in what investigators believe was a hit-and-run crash. Police say the suspected driver fled the scene without stopping to help, but was located and arrested just hours later.
Bicycle Ride Ended in Tragedy
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, while Williams was riding his bicycle on a Milwaukee street.
Investigators say a truck struck Williams before the driver allegedly left the scene without stopping to render aid. Emergency responders rushed to the location after a witness called 911.
Court documents cited by local reports state that the caller identified himself as a medical student and immediately began performing CPR on Williams while waiting for police and paramedics to arrive.
Despite those efforts, Williams later died from his injuries.
Surveillance Footage Helped Investigators Find Suspect
Authorities launched an investigation shortly after the crash and reviewed surveillance video from the surrounding area. According to investigators, the footage helped identify a truck believed to have been involved in the collision.
The investigation eventually led officers to a 55-year-old man who lived nearby, and police arrested him within hours of the incident.
Officials have not publicly released the suspect’s identity, and no formal criminal charges have been filed at this time.
Police confirmed that the case has been submitted to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether charges should be filed.
Family Remembers a Man Who Loved Life
Loved ones described Williams as someone who embraced life despite overcoming serious health challenges. Family members said he was a cancer survivor who enjoyed riding his bicycle every chance he could.
His daughter, Temeria Hubbard, said cycling gave her father a sense of freedom.
“He rode that bike everywhere; nothing stopped him. He just loved to be free,” she said.

She also questioned why the driver allegedly failed to stop after the collision.
“How could you treat anybody that way? How could you hit someone in broad daylight and not even stop?” Hubbard said while remembering her father.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision as prosecutors review the evidence.
Because formal charges have not yet been filed, authorities have released only limited information regarding the suspect or the events leading up to the crash.
As the legal process moves forward, Williams’ family says they are focused on honoring the memory of a man who survived cancer, loved spending time outdoors, and remained devoted to his children.
The case remains under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
