Miami, Florida — Most 18-year-olds are just beginning college, but Nathan Thomas was already standing at the front of a classroom teaching students his own age. The Florida academic has officially earned a place in history after becoming the world’s youngest professor, breaking a record that had stood for more than three centuries.
The achievement has drawn international attention and highlights an academic journey that began years before most students finish high school.
Broke a 305-Year-Old Guinness World Record
According to Guinness World Records, Nathan Thomas became the world’s youngest professor when he accepted an engineering teaching position at Miami Dade College at the age of 18 years and 346 days.
The accomplishment surpassed a 305-year-old record previously held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at 19 years old in the early 18th century.
Nathan also achieved the milestone 16 days younger than Alia Sabur, who has held the record as the world’s youngest female professor since 2008.
The recognition places Thomas among a small group of educators who have made history through extraordinary academic achievements.
Academic Journey Began at Just 14
Nathan’s educational accomplishments started remarkably early.
He earned his associate degree in mathematics from Miami Dade College at just 14 years old, becoming the institution’s youngest graduate at the time.
That family record, however, did not last forever.
His younger brother, Noah Thomas, later graduated from the same college three months earlier than Nathan had, becoming the school’s new youngest graduate.
By the age of 18, Nathan had already completed both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in electrical engineering at Florida International University, accomplishments that helped prepare him for a teaching career while most of his peers were still undergraduate students.
Dream of Teaching Became Reality Sooner Than Expected
Nathan had always hoped to return to Miami Dade College as an instructor. In an earlier interview, he admitted that when he imagined teaching there, he assumed it would happen much later in life.
Instead, the opportunity arrived before he turned 19, allowing him to begin teaching engineering courses to students close to his own age.
The unexpected milestone transformed what had once seemed like a distant career goal into an early professional achievement.
Says Age Doesn’t Matter in the Classroom
Now 21 years old, Nathan says he rarely thinks about the age difference between himself and his students. Instead, he believes everyone enters the classroom with the same objective — to learn.
He has explained that he focuses on helping students succeed, adding that effort and willingness to learn are far more important than age.
His teaching philosophy has earned praise as he continues balancing life as both an instructor and a student.
Teaching While Pursuing a Law Degree
In addition to teaching online engineering courses, Nathan is currently studying at the University of Miami School of Law.
He is expected to graduate in 2028 and hopes to build a career specializing in intellectual property law, combining his engineering background with legal expertise.
His journey from teenage college graduate to record-breaking professor and future attorney continues to inspire students who dream of pursuing ambitious academic goals at any age.
