Dover, Florida — As families prepare for the start of a new school year, volunteers across Hillsborough County are coming together to make sure students have the supplies they need.
Thousands of backpacks packed with essential school items are being readied for the second annual Back 2 School Bash, a community event designed to help families save money while giving children a strong start to the academic year.
Thousands of Backpacks Packed by Community Volunteers
This week, volunteers gathered at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds to fill thousands of backpacks with school supplies that will soon be distributed to local students.
The effort was coordinated by the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO), with support from volunteers representing local businesses, nonprofit organizations, churches, Scout troops, and healthcare provider AdventHealth.
According to ECHO volunteer coordinator Debbie Smith, the goal is simple: help families facing rising expenses before school begins.
“Our biggest aim is to help parents,” Smith said, adding that many households continue to struggle with higher living costs.
Who Can Receive a Free Backpack?
Families can attend the Back 2 School Bash on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds in Dover.
The event is open to students between the ages of 5 and 18, with each eligible child able to receive a free backpack filled with school supplies while supplies last.
Parents or guardians are required to bring a valid photo ID when attending the event.
In addition to backpack distribution, families can connect with more than 100 community vendors offering information on educational programs, health services, family assistance, and other local resources.
Volunteers Say Every Backpack Makes a Difference
Many of the volunteers participating in the packing event say helping local students is a meaningful way to give back.
Volunteer Andria Murray, who packed backpacks alongside her son as part of his Bright Futures community service hours, said school shopping can quickly become expensive for many families.
She noted that even basic classroom supplies add up, making community events like this especially valuable for parents trying to stretch their budgets.
Longtime ECHO volunteer Doug Butler, who has volunteered with the organization for nine years, said supporting students has always been close to his heart.
He shared that his mother was a teacher, giving him firsthand experience with the challenges many educators and families face during back-to-school season.
According to Butler, providing students with the supplies they need helps them begin the school year with greater confidence and a better opportunity to succeed.
Community Support Still Needed
Although volunteers have already packed thousands of backpacks, organizers say there is still room for the community to help.
Murray encouraged residents to continue donating school supplies, explaining that some essential items remain in short supply despite the large-scale effort.
Organizers hope continued community support will allow even more students to benefit as families prepare for the first day of school.
With hundreds of volunteers, generous local sponsors, and dozens of community organizations working together, this year’s Back 2 School Bash aims to ease financial stress for families while ensuring children head back to class equipped with the tools they need for a successful school year.
