Whitley County, Kentucky — A Kentucky man has pleaded guilty in connection with a tragic interstate crash that claimed the life of his girlfriend’s 10-year-old daughter after authorities said he drove a moped while intoxicated with the child riding behind him.
The guilty plea marks another major development in a case that drew widespread attention after investigators alleged the child was placed in an extremely dangerous situation before the fatal collision on Interstate 75.
Fatal Crash Happened During Late-Night Interstate Ride
According to Kentucky State Police, the crash occurred on the night of Aug. 4, 2024, when Darius Wade, who was 31 at the time, was traveling north on Interstate 75 in Whitley County on a moped with his girlfriend’s 10-year-old daughter as a passenger.
Authorities said a 2011 Kia Sportage traveling north on the interstate later struck the moped.
Emergency crews responded to the scene at approximately 11:20 p.m. Both Wade and the child were taken to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to another medical facility because of the severity of their injuries.
Despite emergency treatment, the young girl died. Wade survived the crash and was later taken into custody.
Man Pleads Guilty to Reduced Charges
Following the crash, Wade was originally charged with murder and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, according to Kentucky State Police.
This week, however, he pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and first-degree wanton endangerment, according to regional reports.
Authorities have also stated that Wade did not have a license to operate the moped and was cited for apparent off-highway vehicle violations connected to the incident.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 21.
Child’s Mother Also Sentenced
The investigation also resulted in criminal charges against the girl’s mother, Danisha Martin.
According to local reports, Martin pleaded guilty to complicity to reckless homicide and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Under the terms of her sentence, she must serve at least two years in custody before being placed on probation for five years.
Investigators said Martin knew Wade had a history of drinking but allowed her daughter to ride with him because she reportedly did not believe he was intoxicated at the time.

The case has underscored the serious risks associated with impaired driving, particularly when children are passengers.
Authorities allege that multiple factors—including alleged intoxication, operating a moped on an interstate and licensing violations—contributed to the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
With Wade’s guilty plea now entered, the case is nearing its conclusion as the court prepares to determine his sentence later this year.
