Pepper Pike, Ohio — A roadside act of kindness turned into a heartbreaking tragedy early Saturday morning when 29-year-old firefighter Cameron Duvall was struck and killed while helping a stranded motorist change a flat tire, according to police.
The crash happened around 3 a.m. on July 18, leaving one person dead, another seriously injured and a driver facing multiple criminal charges.
Authorities say Duvall’s final moments reflected the commitment to helping others that defined both his career and his life.
Firefighter Was Helping Stranded Driver Before Crash
According to the Pepper Pike Police Department, officers responded to a three-vehicle crash and found a man and a woman lying between two vehicles.
Emergency responders immediately began lifesaving efforts.
Duvall was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured woman was transported to a nearby hospital by the Pepper Pike Fire Department. Officials said she is now in stable condition.
Investigators determined that the first vehicle had become disabled after suffering a flat tire.
The stranded driver had requested roadside assistance before Duvall and the woman arrived to help, parking their vehicle in front of the disabled car.
Police said the pair were standing near the trunk of the disabled vehicle when another motorist crashed into them.
“While they were working near the trunk of the disabled vehicle, a third motorist struck them and the disabled vehicle,” police said.
Driver Arrested Following Fatal Collision
Authorities arrested the driver of the third vehicle following the crash.
According to police, the suspect has been charged with:
- Aggravated vehicular homicide
- Aggravated vehicular assault
- Operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol
- Failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead
The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
In a statement following the crash, city officials expressed sympathy for everyone affected.
“The City of Pepper Pike extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of these two victims, along with everyone affected by this tragic incident,” police said.
Community Remembers Cameron Duvall
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Cameron Duvall, a firefighter with the North Randall Fire Department.
Village officials said Duvall joined the department in 2022 and quickly earned the respect of his fellow first responders.
In a joint statement, North Randall Mayor David Smith and Fire Chief Marshall Shorts praised Duvall’s commitment to public service.
“Cameron joined the Village of North Randall Fire Department in 2022 and quickly became a respected and valued member of our public safety family.”
The statement added that Duvall was also a resident of North Randall and took great pride in serving the community where he lived.

Fellow Firefighters Honor Fallen Hero
Members of North Randall Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 5365 also paid tribute to Duvall, remembering him not only as a firefighter but as a close friend and brother.
The organization described him as:
“A hero, a brother and a friend.”
In another tribute, firefighters shared a photo of Duvall’s turnout gear bearing his name.
“Thank you for your service, your strength and your brotherhood. You will never be forgotten.”
As investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, Duvall is being remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice while doing what came naturally to him—stopping to help someone in need.
