THE BRONX, New York — Thousands of concertgoers experienced hours of confusion and frustration Friday night after a security breach outside Yankee Stadium forced officials to temporarily lock down the venue, significantly delaying Jay-Z’s third and final stadium concert.
The disruption began before the scheduled 8 p.m. start time when a large group of people allegedly rushed through one of the stadium’s security checkpoints. Authorities responded by closing entrances and temporarily preventing anyone from entering or leaving the venue while police worked to regain control.
Security Breach Triggers Stadium Lockdown
According to a police source, a large crowd broke through security at one of the stadium gates, prompting officials to initiate a full lockdown.
For a period of time, no fans were allowed to enter or exit Yankee Stadium as law enforcement officers assessed the situation and secured the affected entrances.
The unexpected shutdown left thousands of ticket holders waiting outside the stadium for hours, with long lines stretching around multiple entrances as fans searched for updates.
Police officers were later seen patrolling the gates as security measures were reinforced before spectators were allowed to resume entering the venue.
Fans Describe Confusing and Frustrating Experience
Several attendees said the evening quickly turned chaotic after crowds surged through security checkpoints.
Rosalynn Glover, who traveled from Atlanta to attend the concert, said she arrived shortly after 8 p.m. but was unable to enter after crowds allegedly rushed through Gate 2.
“We got here a little after 8, went to Gate 2, they bum rushed Gate 2. Bum rushed. People went past security, were not checked and got into the stadium,” Glover said.
She explained that after Gate 2 was shut down, she and others attempted to enter through Gate 4, where they encountered similar problems.
“We were at the suite section, they would not even let us in there,” she said.
Glover also expressed disappointment with the response she received from some stadium staff members.
“The people working at Gate 4 were laughing. They were taunting us and laughing, which I don’t find funny, when we spend our hard-earned money to be here. I flew in here from Atlanta,” she added.
Concert Delayed by More Than Four Hours
The concert had originally been scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., but the security incident forced a lengthy delay while authorities worked to restore order.
Officials eventually reopened the stadium gates shortly before 10 p.m., allowing fans to continue entering after additional police officers were stationed throughout the entrance areas.
Despite the reopening, the delay continued well into the night as thousands of attendees slowly made their way inside the venue.
Jay-Z ultimately took the stage at approximately 12:15 a.m., more than four hours after the originally scheduled start time.
Police Increase Security Presence
Following the breach, law enforcement officers increased their presence around Yankee Stadium to ensure the remaining crowd could enter safely.
Police monitored each entrance while security personnel conducted screenings before allowing additional fans into the stadium.
Authorities have not announced whether any arrests were made or whether anyone was injured during the security incident. Officials also have not released further details regarding how many individuals were involved in the breach.
Fans Hope for Answers After Delayed Event
While many concertgoers were eventually able to attend the performance, the lengthy delays and confusion left numerous fans frustrated after waiting for hours outside the stadium.
Many attendees said they had traveled long distances and spent significant money on tickets, transportation and accommodations, making the disruption especially disappointing.
Officials have not yet commented on whether any changes will be made to security procedures for future events at Yankee Stadium following Friday night’s incident.
