Virginia Beach, Virginia — What should have been a joyful celebration of achievement turned into unimaginable heartbreak for one Virginia family after an 18-year-old student died unexpectedly just one day before he was set to walk across the stage and receive his high school diploma.
Dominic McClair, a senior preparing for graduation, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on June 11, leaving family members, friends, classmates, and teachers mourning the loss of a young man they say had a bright future ahead of him.
The devastating loss came just hours before a milestone his family had eagerly anticipated for years.
Mother Made Heartbreaking Discovery
According to Dominic’s mother, Rashita Wilson, the day had started like any other.
A cousin had visited the family home to give Dominic a haircut in preparation for graduation ceremonies. Later, Wilson went to check on her son in his bedroom.
What she found changed her life forever.
Wilson told local media that Dominic appeared to be resting in his room with his television on and headphones over his ears, something she described as completely normal for him.
When he failed to respond, she became concerned and attempted to wake him.
“I went into his room,” Wilson said. “He had his headphones on like regular. He had his TV on, he was listening to his music, watching TV like he usually do.”
Realizing something was wrong, Wilson called out to him repeatedly.
“I said, ‘Hey Dominic.’ I said it twice, and he didn’t say anything.”
She then attempted to wake him physically but received no response.

Dominic’s sister, Sierra, immediately checked for a pulse while family members called 911. According to Wilson, they encountered difficulties reaching emergency dispatchers and continued calling until someone answered.

A special section was reserved for loved ones attending on Dominic’s behalf. When his name was called, emotions overwhelmed those present.
“They had roped off a whole spot for our family and everybody who was coming for Dominic,” Wilson said.
His counselor later presented his diploma to Wilson during the ceremony.
