The Varsity boys’ hockey team will face Marquette University High School Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. at the Ozaukee Ice Center.
The Bulldogs began their season with a win against the Fox Cities Stars. Since then, they have secured victories over teams including the Milton Red Hawks, Sauk Prairie Eagles, Oshkosh Ice Hawks, and most recently, Appleton United.
Captain and senior Brady Lane said the game against Appleton United “went pretty well. We won 8-3 and started off very strong. We scored six goals in the first period, which was awesome!” He acknowledged a slower pace after their explosive start, but he said the team “came back and scored two more goals” in the third period.
Lane, who has been playing hockey since he was 8, takes his leadership role seriously. “As a captain, it’s my job to lead by example, but that doesn’t mean I can’t learn from my teammates,” he said.
So far this season, the team has tallied 51 goals.
According to Lane, one area where the team could improve is discipline. “We really need to limit the amount of penalties we take because when we take penalties,” he said, “that is when the other team gets the chance to score a lot.”
Looking to the future, Lane expressed a strong desire to continue playing hockey. “I love hockey, so any opportunity to play after high school, I would want to do it. Whether it is at a college or junior level (club), I think both of those would be an option.”
For now, however, his focus remains on his current team. “I just love my teammates really because we go through a lot of ups and downs, especially during tournaments.” He added, “We got close, and these are friends I’m sure I will have for a while.”
Lane said his former teammate, 2022 graduate Macc Ladd, inspires him. “He said, ‘Have fun with it,’ which is a big thing for me because I think if you work hard and push yourself and continue to push yourself every day, then the fun will just follow you,” Lane said.
