Former Webster Middle School German teacher Maggie Schiel has returned to the district as a Family and Consumer Science teacher.
Schiel was working at Costco when she was contacted that a teaching position became available. She said, “I thought it would be a really cool opportunity and a really great experience.”
After graduating from here in 2005, Schiel attended UW-Platteville and earned a degree in German.
After teaching German at several schools for 13 years, she decided to take a break and become a cake decorator at Costco. “It was difficult to give that up, but I definitely needed a break,” Schiel said. “It was good that I took that break, and I’m glad to be back to teaching.”
She likes to teach both German and cooking. She said she enjoys teaching cooking because it is more hands-on, but she also “likes to talk about German culture.”
She participated in cooking clubs and in summer academy classes for five years before going to Costco and getting her ServSafe Certification. Schiel said that she cooked with her dad when she was younger, which gave her a love for cooking and baking that she holds to this day.
Schiel said her goal as a teacher is to give “students a really great experience. Hopefully they can take the skills that they learned in class and apply them at home.”
She taught herself how to decorate sugar cookies and started her own baking business, Blissful Bites, eight years ago. She takes custom orders through Facebook.
Schiel and her husband, who also graduated from here, have two sons named Lincoln and Michael. They also have two dogs and two cats. Her favorite thing to bake is sugar cookies, and her favorite type of cats are Maine Coons.
