Band director Andrew Westgate has joined the staff after previously teaching for three years at Webster Middle School.
Westgate directs the Concert, Symphonic, Jazz and Marching Bands. He also teaches Music Theory and AP Music Theory.
Westgate graduated from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, majoring in music education. He played the sousaphone in their marching band. “It was my family and my home,” Westgate said. He said he loved going to such a big school because he could always find people to hang out with when he wanted to.
Westgate taught at a middle school in Rockford, Illinois before moving to Milwaukee. He said he “wanted to experience something outside of Illinois” since he grew up there, yet didn’t want to be too far from family. Milwaukee was the perfect option for Westgate and his wife.
He joined the Marching Band staff in 2022 as the assistant director, as it’s something he’s “really passionate about.”
Outside of school, Westgate is married and has a dog named Finn, whom he rescued a few years ago. He enjoys playing underwater hockey with the Milwaukee Manatees and occasionally plays video games. He plays the tuba and piano, and he also sings in a barbershop quartet.
