Junior Henry Eckerdt recently completed an internship at the Capitol in Madison where he worked with State Senator Duey Stroebel.
He said that it was “funny to see how performative it was” in reference to the way members from different political parties interacted with each other on and off camera. The highlight of his experience was having dinner with Governor Tony Evers.
According to Eckerdt, the application for the Senate internship included submitting three letters of recommendation, taking a multiple choice quiz, writing an essay and sending an email to the senator.
“The 2016 election is what got [my interest in politics] started,” Eckerdt said. “I definitely self-study [politics] a lot.” He plans to attend UW-Madison to study political science. He wants to be a lobbyist in the future.
Eckerdt also said he grew up living in Cedarburg during the week and in Chicago on the weekends. “I’m a Chicago sports fan,” he said, “which I know is unpopular here.”
